Rather than handing you a summary and waiting for instructions, it researches competitor pricing across multiple sources, identifies what's changed, assesses the strategic implications against your current model, proposes revisions, and potentially executes those revisions directly inside your pricing system. Continuously. Autonomously. You approved the objective. The agent did the rest.
Multi-agent systems push this further. A coordinator agent receives a high-level objective and breaks it across specialized sub-agents, one for research, one for analysis, one for writing, one for execution. Each operates in its lane, reports back, and the coordinator synthesizes the results. That coordinator is also an AI, making autonomous calls about task allocation, quality, and error handling. No human in the loop between the initial objective and the final output.
OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and a growing number of specialized platforms are all actively building and deploying these capabilities. Gartner projects that by 2028, agentic AI will autonomously make at least 15 percent of day-to-day enterprise decisions currently made by humans, and honestly, that estimate may be conservative.
The Enterprise AI Governance Gap: Where Current Frameworks Break Down
Enterprise governance was designed around human actors. Accountability assumes a person made a decision. Audit trails document what that person did. Compliance frameworks define what a person is allowed to do with data, capital, customer information, and operational systems. When an AI agent runs a chain of autonomous decisions, most of those frameworks either apply imperfectly or don't apply at all.

Good governance for agentic AI requires controls that most enterprises are just starting to build. That means clear scope boundaries defining what an agent can do autonomously versus what needs human sign-off, real-time monitoring against policy constraints, audit logging that can actually reconstruct how a decision was made, and defined escalation paths for when an agent hits a situation outside its operating parameters. Some organizations have pieces of this. Few have all of it. The same structural gaps that derail large-scale transformation programs tend to surface here too: unclear ownership, insufficient monitoring, and governance that only catches problems after the damage is done.
Agentic AI in Practice: Where Enterprise Deployment Is Working Now
The governance complexity is real, but agentic AI is already delivering genuine value in enterprise contexts where the scope of autonomous action is well-defined and the cost of errors is bounded.
Customer service was an early testing ground. Systems that can research a customer issue, pull account history, determine what resolution options are available under defined policy, and execute the resolution, without routing to a human for standard cases, are showing measurable improvements in resolution time and cost per case. The organizations seeing results deployed carefully, with tight scope constraints.
Software development and IT operations are another area where it's working well. Agentic systems handling code review, test generation, deployment pipelines, and incident response can compress development cycles and reduce the human attention required to keep complex technical environments running. The scope of action is concrete, error detection mechanisms are mature, and that combination makes agentic deployment safer than in less structured domains.
Financial operations round out the early wins. Accounts payable, reconciliation, audit preparation: structured workflows and well-defined rules make automation viable here without the governance headaches that come with less predictable environments.
Agentic AI Strategy: What Enterprise Leaders Should Do in the Next 12 Months
The next 12 to 24 months are going to run on two parallel tracks: continued, rapid capability development from the AI labs, and an urgent need for enterprise governance infrastructure to keep pace. Most organizations are stronger on the first track than the second. That gap is the real risk.
On the capability side, expect agentic AI to move from specialized, single-domain deployments toward cross-functional, multi-agent systems that operate across your entire data environment. The companies best positioned to benefit are those that have already built strong data governance, solid AI integration infrastructure, and clear policies for autonomous AI action. Groundwork matters.
On the governance side, the priorities are straightforward even if the execution isn't. Build a clear taxonomy of decision types and define what level of autonomous AI action is acceptable for each. Develop audit logging that actually meets regulatory requirements for AI-assisted decisions. Map specific agentic deployments to named human owners who carry clear responsibility for outcomes. Bring legal and compliance into the conversation now, before deployments create facts on the ground that are much harder to govern after the fact.
Agentic AI isn't something coming down the road. It's here, and enterprise deployment is accelerating. My view: the organizations that treat governance as a prerequisite to scaling these systems, rather than a problem to fix after something goes wrong, will capture real value. The ones that don't will end up as cautionary tales. That window to build a solid foundation proactively is open right now. It won't stay open indefinitely.
